How to Wear the Bold Brow Beauty Trend

Posted by admin On August - 30 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

This fall, as you’ve been flipping through the September issues, you’ve most likely noticed a bevy of bushy-browed models and celebrities reminiscent of Brooke Shields à la “The Blue Lagoon” and Madonna during her “Like A Virgin” days.

Well, your eyes weren’t playing tricks on you.

A new school of in-your-face arches emerged on the Fall 2010 runways of Prada, Thakoon, Balenciaga,Narciso Rodriguez, and Marni. And trendsetters like Victoria Beckham, Sarah Jessica Parker, andScarlett Johansson have all been spotted wearing sharp brows.

“I think that brows are one of the most important features of the face. Whether it was in the ’40s or the ’90s or now, brows always resurface and show us why they’re important,” says CoverGirl celebrity makeup artist Molly Stern. “In a bold brow lies the strength and character of the face.”

While this fall makeup trend may appear to be a bit masculine, the fresh take on this look has a feminine and flattering appeal that’s simple to recreate, according to M.A.C. Cosmetics senior artist Romero Jennings.

“The most important thing to remember when going bolder is to make sure to always choose an eyebrow pencil or powder that is one shade lighter than your own brow’s color for a modern, approachable brow that does not look dated,” says Jennings.

Eager to break out our brow pencils, StyleList tasked makeup artist Emily Kate Warren to mold these runway looks into wearable, bold brows on a real women — namely, Amy Preiser, an associate editor at ShelterPop.

You want to start with well-groomed eyebrows. Using a good pair of tweezers, pluck away any stray hairs. But don’t overdo it, cautions Stern. “If you are unable to stand back and edit yourself, you should have them professionally done.”

Brush brows upwards then lightly draw dashes to fill in gaps that are between your natural hairs using a brow pencil like Clé de Peau Beauté Eyebrow Pencil that is one shade lighter than your natural hairs. Then take an angled brush dipped in a powder the color of your natural brows to darken. Warren recommends not going outside of your natural shape, but deepening just enough so that you can’t see much skin beneath.

MAC & Marcel Wanders Team Up for November

Posted by admin On August - 29 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Come November 24th, Marcel Wanders–industrial designer extraordinaire–will team up with MAC Cosmetics in their annual couture/luxe collection.  In case you’re unfamiliar, this luxe launch anniversarizes such collections as StylisticsMonogram, and Baroque Boudoir.

These luxe collections are always priced significantly higher than your typical MAC collectio (e.g. $22 for a lipgloss) — I don’t have many details on products or pricing here, but if the theme/preliminary image grabs you, just beware that you’ll need to set aside a lil’ more than usual.  The compact looks to be the Sheer Mystery Powder, which they launch in every luxe collection.  There is also Air of Style concentrated perfume, a specially packaged brush (looks like the 187), clutch, and four lipsticks and lip glosses to round it out.

Estée Lauder Pure Color Shadow

Posted by admin On August - 24 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Pure Color Shadow is a brilliant collection of 48 highly pigmented shades, that come in 4 dynamic finishes. The collection again comes from world-renowned makeup artist and Estée Lauder Creative Makeup Director Tom Pecheux.  Just like the Pure Color Gloss, the shadows use the Lauder exclusive True Vision™ Technology which incorporates intense pigments into the shadow for saturated, color rich application. Couple that technology with the four different finishes – matte, satin, luminous and metallic – your eyes will be bright, bold and illuminated.

When asked about the creation of these new shadows, Pecheux said, “I think eyeshadow brings to a woman a lot of self-confidence and power. The new Pure Color EyeShadow shades and finishes are sensual and powerful and I love them. These are definitely my babies.”

The finishes:

  • MATTE: Jet milled coated pigments provide a contemporary, suede-like finish
  • SATIN: A low lustre texture combined with a refined luminosity creates a soft, sophisticated sheen
  • LUMINOUS: Prismatic light-reflecting pearls provide a chic, lustrous sparkle (listed as Shimmer on the EL website)
  • METALLIC: Flattened and round pearls are paired to create intense, vivacious drama

Chanel Ombres Contraste Duo Eyeshadows

Posted by admin On August - 20 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

This fall luxurious textures and intense pigments have been all the rage among the high-end makeup lines, and while these duos may not look the part at first, they’re no exception.

Each one comes with a light cream shadow designed to be used as a base and a darker powder matte shadow for contouring and creating the illusion of depth.

Conveniently, skin is where these products really POP! — both in terms of color and texture — and being as smooth as they are makes them remarkably easy to blend.

COVERGIRL LiquiLine Blast Eye Liner

Posted by admin On August - 13 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

When using eye liner, I go back and forth from powders to pencils all of the time. I like the control I get with a powder and the way that I can blend it into a more smoky look. Then again, a pencil can be quick and easier, especially when going for a summer, easy look. Sometimes though, a pencil can be tough on my eyes. It is either too hard or soft, or just does not blend that way it used to.

COVERGIRL has solved my eye pencil problem with it’s launch in its’ “Blast” line up of products. They recently introduced LiquiLine Blast Eye Liner. Be sure to not let the name fool you. It is not liquid, it is a pencil, albeit a very soft pencil that can mimic the look of a liquid line.

LiquiLine gives you that all-day, striking intensity of a liquid with the effortless application of a pencil. The expertly coordinated water-proof shades work with one of six Smoky ShadowBlast duos for a vibrant and colorful smoky eye!

How to Wear Turquoise Eye Makeup

Posted by admin On July - 28 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

There’s something about the color turquoise that brings about images of cool waters rushing along beaches in the Caribbean and Native American artists fashioning pristine jewels in the classic color.

And the bold shade is definitely in its prime as Pantone LLC has crowned Pantone 15-5519 Turquoise as the Color of the Year for 2010.

Lithe models donned turquoise eye makeup on the Spring/Summer 2010 runways of Nanette Lepore andDerek Lam. And celebrities like Gwen Stefani, Jessica Alba, and Amber Riley have all been spotted on the red carpet with the eye-popping hue.

“Turquoise makeup is a huge summer trend because it has a sexy tropical feel,” says Mathew Nigara, NYC New York Color makeup artist. “It can be whimsical and fun, as well as, look incredible on tanned, shimmering skin.”

When worn with all-black or crisp white and even its color cousin teal, turquoise eye makeup can make quite the statement when applied with a confident hand and a lot of imagination, according to Nigara.

Just keep in mind these simple tips from Nigara on finding a turquoise eye makeup look for your skin tone.

If you are fair to light skinned, use a shimmery taupe cream shadow like NYC New York Color Sparkle Eye Dust in Smokey Topaz with a bit of water and apply with finger from lid to crease. Apply turquoise shadow with a teal base like NYC New York Color Color Wheel Mosaic Eye Powder in Beyond The Sea with a Teal Eyeliner Pencil in the outer half of the eye and blend line under the eye with the same shadow. Pair it with a fresh face and subtle coral cream blush like NYC New York Color Blushable Creme Stick in South Street Seashell. For lips, smooth on a coral lip color with your fingertips to create a vintage ’70s look.

NARS Mangrove Eyeshadow ($23.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a mustard yellow with just a tinge of green. It has a satin sheen, and it’s nicely pigmented. This is a color you just don’t see very often, because it’s not always an easy to wear shade.

Mangrove is an interesting shade to work with, because it takes on much of the tones of whatever it’s paired with or layered on top of. When I used it with Palladium, it looked like a chartreuse green, but when I wore it over a regular eyeshadow base, I was able to get a much more true-to-pan kind of color.

I like the uniqueness of the color, which is something that would make compel me to get it. The quality is lovely, and it’s one of the better textured single shadows–very soft, smooth, but still pigmented. For those who have trouble pulling off warmer yellows and golds, Mangrove may be an answer to that problem–because it is as cool of a yellow as one can get!
