If you thought Chanel was skimping on the darker, vampier shades for fall… not so!  Part of the launch of the newRouge Allure Extrait de Gloss, there are a few new shades of Rouge Allure Lipsticks being launched alongside as well.  Rouge Allure Lipsticks ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) are some of my favorites, because they pack a lot of color in a standout formula:  moisturizing, lightweight, and long-wearing.  I typically get four to five hours of wear, sometimes five to six, with some of the bolder shades (like these).

  • Excessive is this vibrant cherry red with slight blue undertones with a glossy, opaque finish.
  • Emotive is a raspberry pink with a slight fuchsia sheen.  It’s not quite opaque, but it does deliver a fair amount of color coverage.  I found Emotive a little less glossy than Excessive, so it didn’t quite apply as smoothly.

MAC Viva Glam Lipglass: Cyndi & Gaga

Posted by admin On August - 22 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Coming at you on September 2nd, MAC will launch corresponding lipglasses to February’s roll out of Viva Glam Cyndi and Gaga Lipsticks. Like the lipsticks, the lipglasses are only around for a limited time (six months) — both the lipsticks and lipglasses will be available until February 2011.

Just like the same-named lipsticks, Cyndi is a coral with very subtle white micro-shimmer, while Gaga is a light pink with blue undertones and nearly imperceptible white micro-shimmer. Surprisingly, Gaga [lipglass] seems more wearable than its lipstick counterpart–it’s not as cool or blue toned, so its more flattering across skin tones.

Lancôme to Launch Teint Miracle Foundation

Posted by admin On August - 8 - 2010 1 COMMENT

With the introduction of Teint Miracle, Lancôme is hoping to shed new light on the foundation business. Billed as a next-generation foundation, it is designed to work on reemitted and reflected natural light with a proprietary technology.

Specifically, research has shown that approximately 5 percent of light is reflected off skin. Of the 95 percent absorbed, 40 percent is re-emitted through its surface. Factors such as aging, fatigue and dryness can minimize surface radiance. Inner light loses its intensity and purity as the bluish and pinkish hues of flawless, radiant skin are absorbed by melanin and decrease microcirculation.

MAC Film Noir Lipstick Review

Posted by admin On August - 7 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

MAC Film Noir Lipstick ($14.50 for 0.10 oz.) is a deep, reddened brown–very dark, very vampy.  It doesn’t go black on me, but it is incredibly dark.  On me, the red tones help keep it from being too much of a contrast against my warmer skin tone and potentially washing me out.  This is a shade that longs to be the star of a look–just pair it with a little eyeliner, mascara, and a contoured cheek.

Lancome Pink Sapphire L’Absolu Rouge Lipstick ($29.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a rich shade of slightly cooled medium pink with no shimmer, just a glossy sheen.   My favorite part about this particular shade of pink is that it’s not too cool–it’s not severely blue-based, which makes it wearable by both warm and cool skin tones with ease.  It has nearly opaque color pay off, but more importantly, it makes lips look lush, rich, and smooth.  The L’Absolu Rouge formula is silky smooth, creamy, and very moisturizing with nice wear–the more pigmented shades wearing five to six hours for me.

NARS Mangrove Eyeshadow ($23.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a mustard yellow with just a tinge of green. It has a satin sheen, and it’s nicely pigmented. This is a color you just don’t see very often, because it’s not always an easy to wear shade.

Mangrove is an interesting shade to work with, because it takes on much of the tones of whatever it’s paired with or layered on top of. When I used it with Palladium, it looked like a chartreuse green, but when I wore it over a regular eyeshadow base, I was able to get a much more true-to-pan kind of color.

I like the uniqueness of the color, which is something that would make compel me to get it. The quality is lovely, and it’s one of the better textured single shadows–very soft, smooth, but still pigmented. For those who have trouble pulling off warmer yellows and golds, Mangrove may be an answer to that problem–because it is as cool of a yellow as one can get!

More sophisticated than gloss, more precise than lipstick, a good lip stain is invaluable.

While former last-forever incarnations left lips excruciatingly dry, or dripped and feathered messily, the newer ones are made with moisturizing ingredients and go on neatly. Throw in the fact that their color stays on despite food, drinks, kisses, you name it, and you’ve got a real winner.

Recent launches in the lip stain world delve into different price points, finishes and application methods, so there’s a choice for everyone (and an application tip: apply a lip balm first and let it sink in while you do the rest of your makeup. Your lips will be soft enough to avoid weird flaky spots, but not so slippery that the tint won’t go on evenly).

Givenchy Printed Lips Tinted Look Lip Stainer

These chubby magic marker-ish sticks are available in two classic shades (soft, rosy Pink Impression and reddish Rose Impression), $24.50 each. They deliver seriously rich and long-lasting color, so apply quickly — try outlining lips in quick, short strokes, then fill in the rest after you get the shape you want.

Revlon Just Bitten Lipstain by ColorStay

Genius. There’s a moisturizing, antioxidant-enhanced balm at the opposite end of each tint, so the whole thing looks like a giant colored pencil and eraser. Thanks to a small, pointy tip, it’s a cinch to apply, and the balm leaves lips just dewy enough, not gloppy-shiny (and it comes in ten neutral, pink, plum and red shades, $8.99 each).
