How to Wear Turquoise Eye Makeup

Posted by admin On July - 28 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

There’s something about the color turquoise that brings about images of cool waters rushing along beaches in the Caribbean and Native American artists fashioning pristine jewels in the classic color.

And the bold shade is definitely in its prime as Pantone LLC has crowned Pantone 15-5519 Turquoise as the Color of the Year for 2010.

Lithe models donned turquoise eye makeup on the Spring/Summer 2010 runways of Nanette Lepore andDerek Lam. And celebrities like Gwen Stefani, Jessica Alba, and Amber Riley have all been spotted on the red carpet with the eye-popping hue.

“Turquoise makeup is a huge summer trend because it has a sexy tropical feel,” says Mathew Nigara, NYC New York Color makeup artist. “It can be whimsical and fun, as well as, look incredible on tanned, shimmering skin.”

When worn with all-black or crisp white and even its color cousin teal, turquoise eye makeup can make quite the statement when applied with a confident hand and a lot of imagination, according to Nigara.

Just keep in mind these simple tips from Nigara on finding a turquoise eye makeup look for your skin tone.

If you are fair to light skinned, use a shimmery taupe cream shadow like NYC New York Color Sparkle Eye Dust in Smokey Topaz with a bit of water and apply with finger from lid to crease. Apply turquoise shadow with a teal base like NYC New York Color Color Wheel Mosaic Eye Powder in Beyond The Sea with a Teal Eyeliner Pencil in the outer half of the eye and blend line under the eye with the same shadow. Pair it with a fresh face and subtle coral cream blush like NYC New York Color Blushable Creme Stick in South Street Seashell. For lips, smooth on a coral lip color with your fingertips to create a vintage ’70s look.

For those of you who find that rimming your lids with eyeliner make your eyes look tiny there is a move that’ll help.

On the bottom, not only is the line below her lashes (as opposed to inside the rim), but the line stops a little more than half-way in.

By keeping the liner a little lower, you create the illusion that your lids eyes are bigger than they really are and the stopping-half-way things keeps them from looking closed in. It’s less dramatic and smoky than going all the way around, but, hey, if you’ve been struggling with liner for awhile, it’s a good place to start.

Beauty Tip: Lip Color Explained

Posted by admin On May - 5 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

Why does lipstick look different on my lips than in the tube?

Ever try on a way-too-bright lipstick just for fun—only to be pleasantly surprised when it actually looks good? The reason, according to makeup master Pat McGrath, is because the natural color of your lips counteracts the vibrancy of the lipstick hue. “Kill the natural color by applying foundation first, and you’ll get a completely different lip shade using the same lipstick,” she says.

How to Apply Bronzer

Posted by admin On December - 29 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

Apply bronzer where the sun would normally warm the face, such as on tops of cheekbones, temples, bridge of nose and tip of chin. Avoid mixing bronzer into foundation or applying all over the face. To ensure proper application, be sure to use a large makeup brush with longer bristles.

BRONZER TIPS

1 – Bronzer alone can appear dull. For a dewy look, apply cream blush to the apples of your cheeks. The combination of bronzer and cream blush is absolutely gorgeous.

According to makeup artist Bobbi Brown, bronzer looks best on days you don’t wear a lot of foundation.

2 – Keep foundation to a minimum when applying bronzer as this can make your complexion too orange and “dirty” when the bronzer is applied. Apply a little tinted moisturizer if you must.

3 – Apply a little pink blusher to your cheeks as well to give a more natural looking glow.

4 – You must apply bronzer with the correct kind of brush – a wide and fluffy powder brush will work best. My favourite bronzer brushes are big, thick and soft with LONG bristles. This ensures an even application without harsh lines.

5 – When applying any kind of bronzer, it is best to start with a light application and build from there. If you make a mistake and apply too much, wipe off with some cotton wool or apply some light face powder on top to lighten the colour.

How to Get Smokey Eyes

Posted by admin On December - 27 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

Step 1. You must choose a good concealer. Always choose one shade lighter than your skin tone and completely cover any dark circles. Since the smokey eye is very dark, you want to be certain you have good coverage here.

Step 2. With a black eye pencil, draw a line along the upper lashes. Start thin at the inner corner of the eye gradually getting thicker as you work your way out.

Step 3. As close to the lower lash line as possible, draw a thin line. You can stop either one third of the way in or take it all of the way in to the inner corner. It all depends on how dramatic of a look you want. Play around with both and see what looks best on you.

Step 4. With black liquid eye liner, draw a line on top of the black eye pencil. This gives it staying power.

Step 5. Use a dark grey eye shadow and crease brush and apply eye shadow to the crease (only 1/3 of the way in) of your eye, using aback and forth motion. Blend well, until you see no visible lines. You can also use an eye liner brush, dip it into the grey eye shadow and run it over the liquid liner to add to the smokey look.

How to Apply Blush

Posted by admin On December - 13 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

Here are some tips for how to apply blush.

  1. First choose the color using nature as your guide. According to InStyle, the trick is to find a color that matches your cheeks when they’re flushed after exercise or being out in the cold. For a quick test, ‘spank’ your cheeks & use the resulting color as a guide. (We suggest doing this in the comfrot of your home away from other people, wink). Another trick is to match your lip color. Fair skin looks great in rose, olive in peach & dark skin in apricot or even red.
  2. Now that you have the color, choose the right formula for your skin type. Powder is typically best for oily & combo skin. Cream is great for dry skin. Liquid and gel are great for oily skin. For even better results, combine cream & powder together. “It helps my blush stay on longer & looks more luminous,” said makeup artist Laura Mercier in O Magazine . Keep in mind stains — great for well-moisturized skin, not dry skin — tend to dry very fast so blend well & fast.
  3. Apply foundation, eye color & lipstick. While blush is usually your 2nd-to-last makeup step (before powder), you should experiment with what works best for you. Some makeup artists like to apply blush BEFORE foundation for a more ‘natural’ look.
  4. Throw out the freebie ‘Barbie-size’ blush brush that comes with the blush. Use a professional full brush instead, but don’t use the same brush you use for your powder.
  5. Put the blush on your brush, tapping off any excess or put a dab of gel on your fingers.
  6. Look into the mirror and smile. This helps you figure out where the ‘apple’ of your cheek is.

Wearing Red Lipstick

Posted by admin On December - 13 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

Red lipstick is a universal classic and has yet to go out of style, according to the fashion magazines, yet many women assume they can’t wear it. They’re wrong. Here we show you how.

Rule No. 1: The secret lies in the rest of your face. The paler the skin, the bigger the pop. Go light on the eyes and the blush, otherwise you’ll risk looking like a clown . Here’s how to do it: Skip eyeliner and go only for mascara (black for brunettes, brown for blondes and redheads), making sure to apply to bottom lashes (it opens up your eyes). Dust face with powder and cheeks with a soft blush.
Rule No. 2: Line inside of lips Red lipstick tends to bleed, so fill in lips with lip liner first.
Rule No. 3: Pick the right color If your complexion is pink, you’ll look better in plum shades, while girls with yellow tones are flattered by warmer reds that have a brown base, according to celebrity makeup artist Jemma Kidd in the December 2005 issue of Harper’s.

Rule No. 4: Don’t let nails clash We prefer non-red nail polish when you’re going red on the lips. A clear polish or light color is cool, and black polish is a trend that shows no sign of going away anytime soon.

Applying Eye Shimmer

Posted by admin On December - 13 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

Follow these tips and guidelines given below that will tell you the correct way to apply eye shimmer.

  • Wash your face thoroughly and tap it dry with a towel. Apply some moisturizer just in case you have dry skin. Blend it nicely around your eyes and make sure it is evenly spread.
  • Apply concealer/compact all over the face and blend it evenly around the eyes to conceal dark circles, fine lines, moles, etc. Apply make up to the rest of the face before proceeding to the eyes.
  • Apply a bit of eye shadow to define the color and match it according to your attire. If you have an eye pencil of the same color, you can line the lower lid of your eyes with it.
  • Now very carefully take a bit of the eye shimmer on a brush. Apply it gently over the eye lid in one direction, preferably from inside to outside. If you are not confident about the powder shimmer, just wet your brush a bit and squeeze out excess water with your fingertips. Now, ‘draw’ a fine line with it over the eye lid.
  • Dip the tip of the brush in the powder and gently drag it over that wet line. The powder will stick nicely to your eyes. If you feel you have taken a bit too much of eye shimmer, just blot it out carefully with a tissue.

    How to Use Under-Eye Concealers

Posted by admin On December - 8 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

Concealers are applied to cover dark circles around the eyes, thereby grweatly enhancing the appearance of the face. They are matched to the skin tone and are applied before using the harmony foundation. When any product is applied around the eyes, special care must be taken so that the skin is not stretched.Instead of applying the cream from the inside corner of the eye to the outside it should be dabbed on the skin and then gently blended with the finger tips moving from the outside corner to the inside corner. This procedure will not pull the skin. After the product has dried, more can be applied to build up the desired opacity. To remove, use a cosmetic cleanser, instead of vigorously rubbing the skin with soap and water.

How to Apply Blush for Different Face Shapes

Posted by admin On November - 25 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

Blush Application Tip One: Oval Face

This face type typically does not need any contouring at all since the natural slope of the face already provides a perfect plane to apply blush. For a natural look, apply blush onto the apples of your cheeks for a flushed, healthy glow. If you are going out for a night on the town, add slightly more blush to the bridge of your nose for extra color.

Blush Application Tip One: Square Face

For this face shape, soften the angles of cheeks by concentrating the brighter color of the blush on the apples of the cheeks, then sweep the color straight out towards your temples. This will give your face a natural lift. If you want to round the corners of your jawline, lightly dust some blush from your chin to just below your ears.

Blush Application Tip One: Round Face

Start applying blush to the area just above the apples of your cheeks and slightly blend forward to thin the face. Make sure not to get blush too close to your nose; otherwise, the extra color will highlight the rounded area of the cheeks. Next, dust the contour shade just below the cheekbone down to the jawline and blend the color so it looks natural.

    Applying Blush

Posted by admin On August - 12 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

Decide the color of blush you want to apply on your cheeks. For this check the color of your cheeks by pinching your cheeks and wait for a second or you can match your lip color.

Put the blush into the brush, taping off any excess or put a dab of gel on your fingers. Apply the blusher with a brush, on the cheek, in the shape of a triangle, tapering towards the temples. Blend it outwards and upwards. No lines of demarcation should be visible. It should not have a harsh effect, but rather lend the face a warm, soft glow.

Apply blush brush on apple of your cheeks and gently brush up your cheekbone towards your hairline. Dot cream blush beginning at the apple and blend up the cheekbone towards the hairline.

For a natural look, blend it well down your cheeks.

How to Apply Blush – Tips

Tip 1: Its best to apply blush knowing the shape of the face.

    • For a long, narrow face: Apply the color lesser than the lower edge of the cheekbone and keep the angle horizontal for such a face to create the width of the face.
    • For round, square face: Apply color in the middle of the face. Don’t get close on the nose.
    • For skin look clearer: Apply blusher to the apple of your cheeks. Blend it back but don’t go further than the corner of the eye.

Tip 2: Dusky pink blush warms up any tired looking skin.

Tip 3: Wash brushes regularly with a makeup remover or non- soap cleanser.

    Eye MakeUp Tips

Posted by admin On August - 3 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

Prime Time The most important part of any eye make-up routine is to get the base right. Neutralise any redness (especially near the lashes) with a skin-coloured base. Around the eye, foundation tends to slip so choose a specialist primer containing a bit of silicone, which will ‘hold’ any products you apply on top

Take Cover If you suffer from dark circles, counteract the blue under your eyes with a pink-toned base first, then lift any greyness with a dab of yellow-toned, skin-coloured concealer. Your fingers are the best tools for this – pat it on gently, taking care not to drag

Get in Line The most common mistake people make with eyeliner is to draw a thick black line across the lid, rather than working the pigment into the lash roots. Warm the pencil on the back of your hand first. When lining the upper lid, look upwards, and apply from underneath the lashes to get a subtle blended line. If your eyes are small or deep-set, line the lower lashes, too, applying a dark shadow with a blunt brush for a softer effect

Choose Your Palette Black looks striking on everyone, but complement cool blue eyes by choosing warm-toned shadows; deeper purples and blues work just as well as golds and coppers, provided they have a warm undertone. Green or hazel eyes look fabulous with soft plums, browns and forest greens, while brown eyes can get away with pretty much anything

Shade It In For a natural daytime look, sweep a neutral highlighter over the lid, up towards the brow. Next, apply your colour of choice to the lid, keeping the intensity around the lashes. Blend upwards, fading the colour out towards the socket line. Widen close-set eyes by blending a slightly darker shade into the outer corner of the lid
